Eastwood Valley in Miri offers a great escape for golfers
Sarawak, one of two states in East Malaysia is well-known as the Land of Hornbills with its traditional and tribal longhouses, riverine lifestyle, huge caves and in some parts, virtually untouched virgin rainforest.
The state also offers many avenues for golfing from the Arnold Palmer-designed Damai Golf and Country Club in Santubong to the Glen Nickels-designed Eastwood Valley Golf and Country Club in Miri.
The latter offers a par-72 18-hole layout that plays 6,803-metres from the championship tees. It is an attractive playground for varying levels of golfing from the weekend warrior to highly skilled single handicap golfers with its five tees.
Opened for play in 2005 the golf course is complemented by generous tree-lined fairways, man-made lakes, magnificent greens, and strategically placed bunkers. Golfers will enjoy their game with the comfort of environmentally friendly golf carts.
The course requires accurate placement of shots in order to approach the fast Bermuda Tifdwarf greens with both subtle and dramatic contours and strategically placed bunkers.
Golfers who have been to Florida and played the TPC Sawgrass course will be reminded of the 17th green when they see the par 3 13th hole which also features an island green surrounded by water. Like Sawgrass it is an all or nothing carry with one bunker in front and one behind to catch anything short or over-hit.
Facilities are excellent with available accommodation, swimming pool, sauna, jacuzzi, fitness centre and a fully equipped pro shop.
