THE ELS CLUB DESARU COAST
Johor Bahru, Malaysia: Members of the media were given the unique opportunity to be among the first to play at Malaysia’s brand new golf course The Els Club Desaru Coast – The Ocean and were impressed at the challenging 27-hole course.
It was inevitable that the conversation at the Clubhouse after checking out the course was about the numerous bunkers, water hazards and the undulating greens which add to the enjoyment and challenges that the golf course offered.
The three nine-hole courses are distinctly different with Lakes (Par 36), Coast (Par 36) and the Ridge (Par 37) offering challenging play for beginners and single digit handicappers. The manicured fairways are a delight to strike the ball from while the consistent greens need careful reading to sink the putts.
The thick rough flanking the fairways need additional club swing speed or extra club to dislodge the ball and land at the required distance.
The Ocean Course designed by Ernie Els spans over 3,900 acres along a beautiful beachfront facing the South China Sea.
Four-time Majors Champion Els said in a statement: “It certainly has the makings of one of South-East Asia’s top destinations. You have a great location, in close proximity to so many major Asian hubs.
“You have a corner of coastline that simply takes your breath away and an ownership group dedicated to creating some of the finest tourism attractions in the world. When you add these ingredients together, you have the makings of something very special.”
The owner of The Els Club Desaru Coast, Themed Attractions Resorts & Hotels Sdn Bhd (TAR&H), played the perfect hosts offering guests who turned up to check out the Ocean Course with swing tips from the resident pro at the driving range, opportunity to play 27 holes and delicious food from the Golf Terrace – reflecting the excellent service standards that are offered.
The Troon-managed Ocean Course, will also be home to The Els Performance Golf Academy – the first of its kind in the region.
Golfers can also in the near future look forward to the Valley Course designed in collaboration between fellow Majors champions and golfing icons; Els and Vijay Singh – The Valley – which will be a world’s first bringing together two of golf’s most recognised personalities, uniting on this exceptional project.
The Ocean and Valley being adjacent to each other is bound to make golfers stay longer in Desaru to have the unique opportunity to experience the design concepts of two iconic golfers.
Muhammad Zainal Ashikin, Chief Executive Officer Destinations Resorts & Hotel Portfolio of TAR&H said: “Today marks a major first step in the development of Desaru Coast. We have made considerable strides in bringing the very best partners to Johor, and have set in motion a tourism legacy that will deliver jobs and a world class experience for all who visit.
“We have opened The Els Club Desaru Coast – The Ocean, which will fly the flag for the development and pave the way for a succession of top-class amenity introductions.”
The destination will also be home to globally renowned hotel chains and resorts; Aman Resorts & Villas, The Westin Desaru Resort, Anantara Desaru Resort, and Hard Rock Hotel Desaru Coast; a state-of-the-art conference centre, a 27-hole and 18-hole golf course, a themed water park and a retail village.
